Historical context

Pincher is the J. P. Colby dog described as reared near Newburyport, from Jack White’s Teddy and Colby’s Pansy. Joseph L. Colby’s 1936 caption dates him to December 1896; the header retains year precision rather than treating a catalogue’s 31 December as established. That earlier account distinguishes 72 lb chain weight from 56 lb conditioned weight, while later sources give different habitual-weight labels. The 1936 chapter names Bunch, Twister and Malachy among his offspring; the conflicting Paddy/Pansy branch and the cyclic Pilot version remain separately explained. Stratton recalled seeing Pincher’s original photograph during a visit to Louis Colby. Louis Colby recalls that a man surnamed Parker raised Pincher on a small farm near Newburyport, while J.P. Colby visited about every six months. The reminiscence names a caretaker, not a documented transfer of ownership. The published registration list names Plunger (AKC 107849), born 2 April 1906, from Pincher and Bess, and Spry (AKC 139152), born 1 December 1907, from Pincher and Fanny. The red-and-white description belongs to Spry, not Pincher.

  2. Historical association

    Source-reported

Sources attribute breeding and historical ownership to J.P.Colby. The family account places his rearing near Newburyport; the GameDogs entry reports the USA as country of birth and standing. An exact birthplace and dated transfers are not established.

    Source · colby-book
  3. Coat and markings

    Source-reported

The family history describes white with dark patches. FIAPBT describes white with brindle markings; GameDogs says black and white. These descriptions are retained as reports, not a newly verified colour attribute.

    Source · pincher-fiapbt
  4. Reported measurements

    Disputed

The family text reports usual weight 75 lb (about 34 kg), while its photograph caption gives 72 lb (about 33 kg). It separately reports a historical conditioned weight 56 lb (about 25 kg). FIAPBT labels 56 lb as chain weight. These measurements and labels disagree; no single precise weight is adopted.

    Source · colby-book
  5. Parentage versions

    Disputed

Sources name Jack White’s Teddy and Colby’s Pansy as parents. The family chart and Pedigree Database name Charlie Lloyd’s Pansy as Mitchell’s Paddy’s dam, while GameDogs names Charlie Lloyd’s Paddy. The two names are not silently merged or resolved.

    Source · gamedogs
  6. Ancestry research boundary

    Disputed

The inspected GameDogs Pilot→Darby’s Kit branch returns to Pincher and creates a cycle. It is withheld from genealogical imports. The family prose calls Pilot a grandsire, while its chart places him one generation farther back. Reported pedigrees remain incomplete and outside accepted calculations.

    Source · gamedogs
  7. Descendant references

    Source-reported

The family history names Colby’s Bunch as offspring and distinguishes two dogs named Colby’s Twister. These are source reports, not accepted descendant links. The Colby catalog association is not proof that every Colby-labelled dog descends from Pincher.

  8. Earlier account: December, without a day

    Source-reported

The 1936 caption reports December 1896 without a day; later catalogues encode 31 December. The header retains year precision. Its prose distinguishes 72 lb chain weight (about 33 kg) from 56 lb pit weight (about 25 kg); older conflicting reports remain visible.

  9. Named offspring in the 1936 account

    Source-reported

Joseph L. Colby’s 1936 Pincher chapter names Colby’s Malachy, Bunch and Twister as offspring. These are historical name reports; no new dog records or parentage edges are created, and the separate Twister identities are not resolved by this mention.
